[Salon] Fwd: Breaking: Rep. Becca Balint calls for "cessation of hostilities" in Gaza !!!

My last, until I see the war enthusiasts/promoters again, as at the RJC conference this weekend. I would be derelict if I didn’t share this from Robert Naiman, whom I hope doesn’t mind me sharing it. Just a wild guess but I bet Rep. Ballint wasn’t at the Republican Jewish Fascist Coalition conference this weekend, as I’m sure JVP is not there either, nor would be allowed in. Thus, the strikethrough above.

Akha! Akha! Another sneaky Yiddish euphemism for #CeasefireNOW!

"cessation" = "cease." "hostilities" = "fire." Pretty sneaky, eh? Mark me down as impressed!

Plus, it's a yuuuge win anytime a Member of Congress uses the word "hostilities" in this context. "Hostilities" is a Congressional Article I War Powers "term of art." It takes a Looong Meaningful Glance at Section 8 of the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which says:

'For purposes of this joint resolution, the term "introduction of United States Armed Forces" includes the assignment of member of such armed forces to command, coordinate, participate in the movement of, or accompany the regular or irregular military forces of any foreign country or government when such military forces are engaged, or there exists an imminent threat that such forces will become engaged, in hostilities.'

That's how we went after the Pentagon refueling of the (U.S.-supplied-and-maintained) Saudi warplanes bombing Yemen (with U.S.-supplied bombs & U.S. targeting intelligence, all shielded by the U.S. veto at the Security Council) with the Sanders-Lee-Murphy Yemen War Powers Resolution in March 2018. We said: "Hey, look everyone! "Refueling" is clearly covered by Section 8 of the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which is the Law of the Land! We can introduce a 'privileged' resolution in either House that forces a vote on prohibiting it!" (Between you, me, and the NSA, it was Stephen Miles of Win Without War who called it first. Credit where credit is due. Thank you for your leadership, Stephen!)

If we can all agree that Section 8 of the War Powers Resolution of 1973 (which is the Law of the Land, passed by Congress as a Joint Resolution, overriding Nixon's veto) applies in this case, then we can go after refueling, and/or white phosphorus, and/or intelligence sharing for Israeli airstrikes on civilians and civilian infrastructure, and/or ... And we can do it in either House with a privileged resolution that forces a vote, whenever the sponsors are ready, whenever the respective House is in session.
